Reading Curriculum
At The Pochin School, it is our aim for all children to learn to read fluently and with understanding; to view themselves as readers and have access to quality texts; to develop a love of reading; and through reading be able to understand more about themselves, others and the world in which they live.

Reading for Pleasure
The aim of this reading spine is to expose the children at The Pochin School to a variety of different books, expand their vocabulary and strengthen their comprehension leading to independence and confidence in reading.

Please find below the expectations for reading rom Year 1 to Year 6. These are the core objectives that the children need to be able to do in order to be working at age expectation:
Reading Question Stems
When reading with your child at home, it would be great if you could ask questions and discuss their understanding.
At The Pochin School, we use VIPERS to question the children’s understanding.
V – Vocabulary
I – Inference
P – Prediction
E – Explain
R – Retrieve
S – Sequence
Please see below some ideas to support the different type of questioning we use at school.
The six domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding, fluency etc. VIPERS is not a reading scheme but rather a method of ensuring that teachers ask, and pupils are familiar with, a range of questions. They allow the teacher to track the type of questions asked and the children’s responses to these which allows for targeted questioning afterwards.
